William W. (Wally) Altman, age 91, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 in Clearwater, Kansas.
Visitation with family present, 5:30-7pm, Friday, January 6, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater. Memorial Services, 10am, Saturday, January 7, at Clearwater United Methodist Church.
Wally was born in Wellington, KS on June 3, 1931, to Harlan C. and Katherine E. (Barbour) Altman. He grew up in Wellington with two older brothers and attended Wellington High School before heading to the University of Kansas where he lived in the Beta Theta Pi house. Wally met Nella – the love of his life for 65 years – on the train back to KU after their Christmas break in 1949. Wally played freshman basketball at KU before entering the Army serving in the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War. During his time of service Nella and Wally were married on February 28, 1953. They returned to Lawrence after his service where Wally graduated from KU in 1956.
Upon his graduation from KU Wally worked at the First National Bank of Wichita through December, 1956. He began his career at Home State Bank, Clearwater, KS in January, 1957. Wally’s professional career included President of the Sedgwick County Bankers Association and member of Governing Council and Board of Directors of the Kansas Bankers Association. Wally loved and was proud of the Clearwater community. He served on numerous civic and economic development boards. He was President of the Lions Club and Clearwater Baseball Association and served as Chairman of the United Way local chapters for several years. He was a founding member and served on the board of directors of the Clearwater Development Corporation for many years. He served in many capacities over the years for the Clearwater United Methodist Church as well as enjoyed his time singing in the choir. Wally was the finance chairman of the Masonic Lodge and an Adjutant for the American Legion.
Wally loved to watch and in his younger days participate in athletics. He loved to watch KU basketball and enjoyed attending KU football games. He achieved the most gratification following his children and grand-children. He loved family gatherings and in his later stages of life was insistent upon timely updates on his great grand-children.
Wally was preceded in death by his wife Nella M. Altman, his parents Harlan C. and Katherine E. Altman; his two brothers, Harlan C. Altman, Jr. and Richard B. Altman. Survivors include: his son, Bill (Debby Kay) Altman; daughter, Kathy (Steve) Konen; grandchildren, Whitney (Tom) Marcellino, Wendy (Brett) Becker, Will Altman, Jennifer (Mario) Garcia, Sarah (Eric) Macke; and, great grand-children, Kaylee, Larson Bailey, Ace, Thomas, Baron, Addy, Benedict, Cate, Madelyn, Izzy, Laney and Evie.
