Wanda J. (Smith) Turvey

November 30, 1927 — November 30, 2022

Wichita

Wanda (Smith) Turvey, age 94, passed away, Saturday, February 25, 2023.

Visitation, Noon-7pm, with family present from, 5-7pm, Wednesday, March 1, at Shinkle Mortuary, Haysville. Services, 1pm, Thursday, March 2, at Northside Church of Christ, Wichita.

Wanda was born on November 12, 1928 in Davison, MI, to Francesco Joseph Cicalo and Esther Mary Ellen Smith.

Wanda lived her early years in Michigan. The remaining years of her youth were spent moving multiple times and ending up in Seligman, MO for her senior year in high school.  It was while she lived in Seligman, MO, she met her husband of 52 years, Ray Turvey.

Ray and Wanda were married in Kenton, OH on August 28, 1948.  Ray and Wanda eventually settled in Peck, KS where they raised their five children. Ray and Wanda were members of the Peck Church of Christ. Members at the Peck Church were instrumental in establishing their Christian foundation while also making lifelong friends.

As the children left the home Ray accepted job promotions that transferred the family to Leavenworth, KS, Grand Rapids, MI, and San Jose, CA.  Wanda established friends in each of these locations and she stayed in contact with these friends throughout her life.  Ray and Wanda would retire in Cassville, MO, near where their journey together had started. In 1998, they decided to move back to the Wichita area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Wanda had many talents, she was a fabulous cook, especially cinnamon rolls and pies, excellent seamstress and made clothes for her children and grandchildren.  Later in her life she started hobbies that allowed her to expand her creative abilities.

Wanda started quilting and made numerous quilts and baby blankets. Each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren received a quilt or baby blanket. In the last ten years she started making cards and if you were lucky enough to receive one you knew you received something special.

Wanda was a compassionate person and had the ability to make people comfortable when she met you.  Wanda was genuinely interested in knowing you and your family. Her memory of people she met, and the details of their families always amazed everyone.

Most importantly Wanda was a good Christian woman.  She loved Jesus, her family, and her Church family.  Wanda will be missed.
