Virginia Irene Guthrie went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 21, 2017, just one month shy of her 95th birthday. She was born to Frank and Sarah Elizabeth Stoll on November 20, 1922 in Oakwood, Oklahoma. When the depression hit, they moved to Arkansas, and then to Missouri, before the family made their final move to Kansas. Virginia attended East High School in Wichita and during her senior year she met her future husband, James Luther Guthrie, Jr., in Lynnwood Park near their homes. After graduation, they were married in her parents home on August 29, 1942. James joined the military along with his brother, Donald, and they were stationed in San Antonio, Texas. After being honorably discharged from the service, James and Virginia made their home in Wichita, Kansas. They faithfully attended Immanuel Baptist Church. While living in Wichita, they had their four children. In 1954, they moved to Derby where they purchased their first home and began to raise their young family. Soon after moving to Derby, they, along with five other couples, met in a private home for Bible Fellowship. From that Gathering of Believers, Pleasantview Baptist Church was established in 1955. Virginia enjoyed reading, faithfully serving in various areas of church ministry, cooking, and being involved in her community. She especially enjoyed the family get togethers and the cookouts they hosted on their beautiful property. After their retirement in 1983, traveling with friends became one of their favorite pastimes. They were blessed to have enjoyed 70 years of marriage before Dad went home to be with the Lord. Mother Loved her family, was a devoted wife and mother, and will be greatly missed by all who were so very fortunate to have known her and be a part of her life on this earth.
