Russell Laverne Baker

Russell Laverne Baker, 87, of Burrton, Kansas, passed away on March 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 10, 1937, and throughout his life, he was known for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his work.

Russell was married to his beloved wife, Helen, for 65 years, and together they resided in Burrton, KS, where they spent many wonderful years in the community. There, they raised two sons, Rusty and Tony, and created lasting memories with their grandchildren and friends.

His family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, Tony (Sheryl); and daughter-in-law, Kathy, along with eight grandchildren: Blake (Becki) Baker, Tisha Baker, Zach (Christine) Baker, Jordan (Emily) Baker, Jacob (Makaila Chadwick) Baker, and Nathan (Sydney Alexander) Baker, Heather (Ray) Lora and Jace Crable. He is also survived by his seven great-grandchildren: Gena, Andrew, Karina, Eleanor, Halston, Hayes, Josie, and another great-granddaughter expected in May.

He was preceded in death by his father Russell, his mother Thelma, son Rusty, his sister-in-law Linda, and his brother-in-law Marvin.

Russell’s dedication extended beyond his family life—he served as Mayor of Burrton and on the Burrton City Council. He was also a proud veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in the 1st Guided Missile Brigade Battery C and stationed in Germany. He was also involved with the Emmett H. Nueway American Legion Post in Burrton, where he served as Commander for many years.

Russell retired after 34 years of service with Kansas Power & Light (KP&L) at their Hutchinson, KS power plant. He spent the last 13 years of his career as a maintenance foreman and took great pride in managing his team and the work they accomplished. After retirement, Russell continued to serve his community as a maintenance supervisor for the Brigadune Housing Complex in Burrton, where he shared his expertise and continued to make a difference.

Russell’s life was marked by his sharp wit and sense of humor. He was always ready with a quick joke or a funny story and his ability to share it with others made him a beloved figure among family, friends, and colleagues.

Russell had many interests, including his love of Western literature. He was an avid reader, and it is said that he read nearly every Western book available at the Clearwater, KS library. Russell also had a passion for "piddling" in his garage, making it his personal sanctuary for tinkering and detailing vehicles.

A visitation will be held at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, 200 S Tracy, Clearwater, KS 67026, on Thursday, March 27, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Clearwater Public Library, 109 E Ross, Clearwater, KS 67026, to honor Russell’s love of reading.
