Darlene (Quimby) Horinek, age 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 16, 2026, after a long and difficult battle with dementia.
Graveside service will be June 12, at 10am at Longwood Cemetery, Ponca City, OK, with a memorial luncheon immediately following at the Elks Lodge. The family welcomes all who knew and loved Darlene to attend.
Darlene was born on August 12, 1951, in Tokyo, Japan, to Leonard E. and Yoshiko “Danny” (Ushio) Quimby. Darlene and her parents moved to the US when she was one and the family eventually settled in Lubbock, TX.
Darlene eventually moved to live with and help her grandparents, George E. and Beaulah Quimby, on their farm in Ponca City and graduated from Ponca City High in 1969. She completed her associate’s degree at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. Here she met and married James K. Horinek in 1970, and the couple settled in Oxford, KS, where Darlene was a homemaker until she and Jim divorced.
Darlene remained in Oxford until her children graduated and then returned to live in Ponca City where she felt most at home. Unfortunately health and job issues caused her to move back to the Winfield area to be closer to family. Her battle with dementia slowly took her from us, but you could still catch glimpses of her spirit up until the end. Our hearts are heavy, but we find comfort knowing she is no longer suffering and is finally at peace.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Yoshiko “Danny” (Ushio) Quimby; brother, Walter Quimby; grandson, Karsyen L. Pinion. She is survived by her children, Sheila (Jim) Fugarino and Greg (Jennie Pinion) Horinek, all of Clearwater, and Kevin (Kelsey) Horinek of Winfield; siblings, Beverly (Kenny) Ellis, Leon (Christi) Quimby, and Richard (Pat) Quimby, all of Lubbock, TX, and Kaffy (Rick) Totten of Oxford; grandchildren, Tyler Fugarino, Nathan Fugarino, Kristen Wilson, Kolson Horinek, and Kaleb Horinek, all of Clearwater, and Kinley Horinek and Keagan Horinek of Winfield; and one great-grandson, Tucker Jackson of Clearwater.
