Darlene Horinek

August 12, 1951 — April 16, 2026

Mount Hope, Kansas

Darlene (Quimby) Horinek, age 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 16, 2026, after a long and difficult battle with dementia.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 12, 2026, in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Cremation has taken place.

Darlene was born on August 12, 1951, in Tokyo, Japan, to Leonard E and Yoshiko “Danny” (Ushio) Quimby. Darlene and her parents moved to the US when she was one and the family eventually settled in Lubbock, TX. Darlene loved her grandparents, George E and Beaulah Quimby, and their farm in Ponca City, OK. Darlene moved to live with them permanently and graduated from Ponca City High in 1969. She completed her Associates Degree at NOC in Tonkawa where she met and married James K Horinek in 1970. The couple settled in Oxford, KS, where Darlene was a homemaker until she and Jim divorced. Darlene remained in Oxford until her children graduated and then returned to live in Ponca City. Darlene enjoyed sports, was a softball and bowling coach for many years, and also competed in bowling and pool leagues. Darlene enjoyed cooking for others, playing with her grandkids and going fishing whenever she had the opportunity. Health and job issues caused her to move back to the Winfield area to be closer to family. Her battle with Dementia slowly took her from us, but you could still catch glimpses of her spirit up until the end. Our hearts are heavy, but we find comfort knowing she is no longer suffering and is finally at peace.

Preceded in death by parents, Leonard and Yoshiko “Danny” (Ushio) Quimby; brother, Walter Quimby; grandson, Karsyen L. Pinion.

Survived by children, Sheila (Jim) Fugarino and James “Greg” (Jennie Pinion) Horinek both of Clearwater, KS, Kevin (Kelsey) Horinek of Winfield, KS; siblings, Beverly (Kenny) Ellis, Leon (Christi) Quimby, and Richard (Pat) Quimby all of Lubbock, TX, Kaffy (Rick) Totten of Oxford, KS; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson.
